9-Bayan or Sarili?
On the 14th of August we watched a seminar in the APC auditorium about heroism. I walked into the auditorium expecting hours of boredom. I stand corrected.
Firstly, they told stories about what our heroes did, but this was not the ordinary stories you hear about them fighting for our beloved country. On the contrary, they told us that our heroes also did stuff like play guitar, cosplay, check out chicks, and do their own hobbies. They weren't heroes 24/7, they also did normal people stuff, like us.
Second, they showed us a trailer of the movie Heneral Luna. It showed us the life of Antonio Luna as a general. The movie showed us the problem Filipinos were experiencing that time. Themselves. The problem Heneral Luna experience back then was Filipinos. Regarding the cinematography, it was great because even though it is a historical film, the director made it more appealing to the younger generation by inserting a character to which we, the younger generation, can relate to. They also, changed some of the script as not to make the movie boring.
I learned a lot from this seminar. First, I learned that I can also be a hero by doing all the things I like, but I must also be willing to fight for my country. You can have fun once in a while but do not forget the hardship that our heroes went through. I also learned that you don't have to be a general, a soldier, a doctor to be a hero. You can be an I.T. and still be a hero, so that's great. We can be heroes by the little things we do like supporting this amazing film by sharing it to our friends and family.
In the seminar they also asked us this questionable question. "Bayan o Sarili?" which means your country or yourself? People nowadays only choose the option where they are more comfortable and where they are more safe. That's selfish thinking. People should remember what our heroes did to free our country from foreign oppressors. They were selfless, they put themselves in danger to try and free our country. We should too. How about you which would you choose? "Bayan o Sarili?"
